Along the banks of the great Ayeyarwady river, in Bagan region, stand over 3,000 monuments and shrines, formerly a centre for Buddhist worship and education. The ancient Kings of Burma devoted their energies to creating this area as the #1 Buddhist sanctuary in S.E.Asia. While the many great palaces, made from wood, have long since burnt down, hundreds of temples and pagodas remain on the banks of the Ayeyarwady River. As a World Heritage Site, Bagan stands alongside the other great Buddhist centres of S.E Asia, comparable with the legendary Angkor Wat in Cambodia. The main centre is around the original city, on the river. Local horse and carts can be hired complete with a driver and bicycles are also available. All temples and pagodas are original in design and conception, no two are the same. Bagan is a place to experience peace of mind. An ideal spot for contemplation. As you see the temples light up as the sun sets, you will understand why Bagan has for centuries been seen as the Spiritual Capital of Myanmar.
